Prenatal DNA Paternity testing

Clients who wish to determine paternity during pregnancy may opt for a prenatal Paternity test, similar to normal DNA paternity test, the prenatal test analyses the baby’s DNA with that of the alleged father. The baby’s DNA is established at conception; a prenatal test gives the same conclusive results as a normal paternity test.

Note: Prenatal sample collection is done at the discretion of the gynecologist. This is done because prenatal sample collection poses significant risk to both mother and baby. DNA Test recommends counseling with a medical doctor prior to prenatal test consideration.

To obtain samples from the unborn child, the gynecologist uses either two procedures depending on the stage of pregnancy.

Stage of Pregnancy Type of Cells Collected Collection Procedure
Chorionic Villi Sampling(CVS) 10th through 13th week Cells from the Placenta, a membrane surrounding the developing fetus Guided by ultra-sound, gynecologist uses a catheter through the vagina or a long, hollow, needle through the abdomen to collect cells.
Amniocentesis(Amnio) 14th through 24th week Loose fetal cells released into amniotic fluid surrounding the developing fetus. Guided by ultra sound, the gynecologist uses a long needle through the abdomen to collect amniotic fluid.

Should the patient be suitable for a prenatal test, kindly contact our offices with gynecologist’s contact details. DNA Test will contact gynecologist and advise collection procedure. On the date of the procedure, a buccal swab sample is required from the alleged father; this will be the sample against which analysis is done.

DNA Test arranges for the collection of the samples directly from gynecologist offices. The cost of the analysis excludes gynecologist fees but includes analysis and reporting costs.

Results are normally available within 10-15 working days.
For further information regarding prenatal test, we advise you to contact our offices.
